China and the UK have taken a new step in clean energy collaboration. On March 17, Wang Hongzhi, head of China’s National Energy Administration (NEA), and Ed Miliband, the UK’s Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, co-chaired the 8th UK-China Energy Dialogue in Beijing. The discussions covered clean energy technology, energy transition strategies, energy security, and global energy governance.
Wang emphasized that China and the UK share broad common interests in the energy sector and have a strong foundation for cooperation. He expressed China’s willingness to work with the UK to implement the consensus reached by both countries' leaders and advance practical, mutually beneficial energy projects.
Miliband highlighted the UK’s commitment to deepening exchanges through platforms like the UK-China Energy Dialogue, aiming to enhance collaboration and contribute to global climate action.
Following their discussions, the two officials signed the Memorandum of Understanding on the UK-China Clean Energy Partnership. The agreement outlines priority areas for cooperation, including power market reform, grid infrastructure, battery storage, offshore wind, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), and the development of clean hydrogen.
To complement the dialogue, both sides will also hold three side events: a UK-China seminar on power market reform, the 10th Annual Meeting of the UK-China Offshore Wind Industry Cooperation Steering Committee and its 10th Anniversary Cooperation and Development Seminar, and a UK-China seminar on CCUS in the energy sector. These events will provide a platform for sharing expertise and exploring new opportunities for collaboration.
