Guangdong is set to see its demand for green electricity surpass 10 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in 2025, according to China Southern Power Grid’s Guangdong branch. Most of this demand comes from industries such as computer communications, electronic equipment manufacturing, and internet services, which together account for about 75% of the province’s total green power consumption.

Green electricity trading in Guangdong has been growing steadily. By the end of 2024, cumulative green power transactions had exceeded 12 billion kWh, while the price of green energy attribute transactions had dropped to 0.88 cents per kWh. This price reduction makes green electricity more affordable and supports the province’s transition to a low-carbon energy system. As of February 2025, Guangdong’s total installed renewable energy capacity had reached 66.55 million kW, accounting for 30% of its total power generation capacity. The province also leads mainland China in offshore wind power, with an installed capacity of 12.22 million kW, while distributed solar capacity has reached 29.32 million kW.

According to the Guangdong Power Exchange Center, more than 630 companies have signed up for the province’s 2025 green electricity trading program. Key industries driving this demand include computer communications, electronic manufacturing, internet services, petroleum, and coal processing. "Guangdong’s green power trading platform offers various certification materials, helping export-oriented businesses meet green energy audit requirements," said Wang Haohao, head of development research at the Guangdong Power Exchange Center.

In July 2024, Guangdong launched a green power traceability and certification system for market participants. By the end of February 2025, the Guangdong Power Exchange Center had issued 641 green electricity traceability reports to 112 companies.
