The energy storage industry holds a crucial position in accelerating the journey towards carbon neutrality and facilitating the transformation to green energy. Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has been seeking opinions on the "Action Plan for High-Quality Development of New Energy Storage Manufacturing Industry", with the aim of better fulfilling application requirements in various sectors such as electricity, industry, transportation, construction, communication, and agriculture. So, what is the current situation and future trends of China's energy storage industry?

Gao Dongsheng, Chief Economist at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, pointed out that China's energy storage sector has experienced rapid expansion in recent years. In 2023, the output value of new energy storage exceeded 300 billion yuan, and continuous technological progress has led to the initial formation of an industrial ecosystem. Under the impetus of supportive policies and market forces, China has gradually established a comprehensive new energy storage system.

Su Bo, Vice Chairman of the Economic Committee of the National Committee of CPPCC and Director of the National Intelligent Manufacturing Expert Committee, noted that from January to August this year, the cumulative charging and discharging capacity reached approximately 26 billion kilowatt-hours nationwide, which is equivalent to about 620 hours, effectively supporting the stable operation and reliable supply within power systems. It is expected that by 2030, the cumulative installed capacity of new energy storage will reach 220 GW, and the total industrial output will exceed 3 trillion yuan.

In recent years, remarkable breakthroughs have been achieved in China's energy storage technology. Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. recently introduced a hybrid battery that can achieve an electric range of over 400 kilometers and features ultra-fast charging capabilities (4C). This innovation addresses the issue of frequent recharging faced by traditional hybrid vehicle owners by enhancing range safety features.

Materials are vital upstream components for both the energy storage sector and the broader renewable energy industries. As this field advances, research on relevant materials is also progressing rapidly. At Junjie Materials Company, a leader in innovative materials, Chief Engineer Li Hongfa presented key products such as honeycomb ceramics, which are essential for zero-carbon factories or the necessary raw materials for producing positive and negative electrodes used in clean energies.

The World Energy Storage Conference was recently held in Ningde City under the theme "Writing a New Chapter in Global Energy Storage: Building Safe Green Heights". Experts at the conference agreed on the vast development potential of this sector in the next decade and its essential role in constructing modern power systems.

Academician Shu Yinbiao from the Chinese Academy of Engineering emphasized two major achievements in the low-carbon transition: establishing the world's largest clean power generation system and creating overall efficient, safe, and low-carbon frameworks. However, challenges remain regarding supply security and stability, which require improved operational mechanisms, as well as innovations in key technologies, including standardization efforts and management protocols related to carbon footprints, all with the goal of enhancing the integrated support role of stored energy in the future.

Wu Shaojian, Vice President of Ningde Chamber of Commerce, reported strong participation from numerous companies, including CATL, during the expo, showcasing the latest technologies and products spanning fields such as batteries, photovoltaics, and management systems. This highlights Ningde's leading position as "China's Battery Capital", with over 40% of the global market share and ambitious plans for significant growth towards becoming a vital coastal clean-energy hub by 2030. There are plans underway involving investments totaling 1010 billion yuan in diverse projects ranging from novel batteries, systems, materials, electric vessels, to services, thereby strengthening the resilience and security of the entire renewable supply chain.
