Ganmaoling Granules are a widely used Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) preparation formulated to relieve symptoms of the common cold, such as fever, headache, nasal congestion, and sore throat. Drying is a critical unit operation in their manufacturing process, occurring after the wet granulation step and before final packaging.
Purpose of Drying in Ganmaoling Granules Production:
Moisture Reduction: Wet granules exiting the granulator contain significant moisture (from the binder solution and potentially hygroscopic herbal extracts). Drying reduces this moisture to a strictly controlled, low level (typically below 5-8%).
Stability Enhancement: Excess moisture promotes microbial growth, chemical degradation (hydrolysis) of active phytochemicals, and physical instability (caking, hardening). Proper drying ensures long-term shelf life and maintains therapeutic efficacy.
Improving Flowability & Handling: Dried granules are free-flowing, essential for accurate filling into sachets or bottles during packaging without clogging machinery.
Achieving Desired Texture: Drying helps solidify the granules, giving them the required mechanical strength to withstand subsequent handling, transport, and dissolution when consumed.
Finalizing Granule Structure: The drying process helps set the granule structure formed during wet granulation.
Common Drying Methods:
Hot boiling drying
The granular solid material is added to the fluidized bed dryer by the feeder, the filtered clean air is heated and sent to the bottom of the fluidized bed by the blower, and contacts the solid material through the distribution plate, to form fluidization to achieve air-solid heat and mass exchange. After the material is dried, it is discharged from the discharge port, and the exhaust gas is discharged from the top of the fluidized bed, and the solid powder is recovered by the cyclone dust collector and bag dust collector before being emptied.
After successful drying, Ganmaoling granules are free-flowing particles with consistent size distribution, low and controlled moisture content, and the required mechanical strength. They undergo strict quality control testing (appearance, moisture content, dissolution rate, identification and assay of marker compounds by HPLC/TLC, microbial limits) according to pharmacopoeial standards (e.g., Chinese Pharmacopoeia) before being released for packaging into individual dose sachets.
