China’s coal production in 2024 continued to be dominated by four major regions—Shanxi, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, and Xinjiang—where industry consolidation and supply-side reforms have further concentrated output. Among them, Xinjiang saw particularly strong growth. According to the latest data, 13 of China’s 23 coal-producing provinces and regions increased production in 2024, while 10 saw declines. Eight regions produced over 100 million tons, ranked in order of output: Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Xinjiang, Guizhou, Anhui, Henan, and Ningxia. Another four regions—Shandong, Gansu, Yunnan, and Heilongjiang—had production between 50 million and 100 million tons.

The four core coal-producing regions—Shanxi, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, and Xinjiang—collectively produced 3.89 billion tons, up 100.75 million tons or 2.7% from 2023. Inner Mongolia led the way with 1.3 billion tons, an increase of 85.88 million tons. Shanxi produced 1.27 billion tons but saw a decline of 87.84 million tons. Shaanxi’s output reached 780 million tons, up by 18.67 million tons. Xinjiang surpassed 500 million tons for the first time, reaching 540 million tons after an 84.05 million-ton increase.

Xinjiang recorded the fastest growth among the eight provinces producing over 100 million tons, with a 17.5% surge due to rapid capacity expansion. Meanwhile, Shanxi’s output dropped 6.9% year-on-year, largely due to policy restrictions. The continued rise in coal production concentration across these four major regions reinforces their role as the backbone of China’s coal industry.
