According to the National Energy Administration, China’s total electricity consumption in February reached 743.4 billion kWh, an 8.6% year-on-year increase. The rise was driven by growth across all major sectors: primary industry saw a 10.2% increase, while the secondary industry, which includes manufacturing, rose by 12.4%. Tertiary industry, which includes services, grew by 9.7%, and residential electricity use increased by 0.1%.
In the first two months of the year, total electricity consumption stood at 1.56 trillion kWh, marking a 1.3% increase compared to the same period last year. This slower growth is partly attributed to warmer-than-usual temperatures in January, which limited household electricity demand.
Despite this, some sectors saw notable growth. The information technology sector, including software and services, saw a daily electricity consumption increase of 13.5% year-on-year, with internet and related services rising by 25.2% due to advancements in AI, big data, cloud computing, and 5G technologies. Additionally, the wholesale and retail sector grew by 9.0%, while the electric vehicle sector, driven by the expanding market for EVs, saw a 40.1% increase in daily electricity use.
